An alkalizing diet is one that helps a person even out the pH level in their body, by reducing the acidity in their diet. Having an acidic diet or an acidic body can be very unhealthy, and can even cause illness and disorders if not properly checked. To be able to have the correct balance of acidity and alkalinity in your body, you can utilize an alkalizing diet to lessen the acids you take in. Here are a few tips on what to eat on an Alkaline Diet:
• Green Salads: Some greens that are used in salads have very high water content. Greens such as cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes are alkaline foods and can help with balancing your pH level. The benefit of a green salad is that you can add all sorts of alkaline vegetables and fruits with it for a tasty and healthy combination.
• Celery: Celery is one of the most alkaline vegetables you can eat. It quickly neutralizes acids and has a number of other nutritious values. Celery has high water content and can help with digestion. You can add celery just before you start your meal, and it can even be a light snack when you feel hungry.
• Soy, Almond or Rice Milk: While milk in general is considered neutral and even alkaline, some components in cow’s milk are not needed and lessen the alkaline level of the milk. Alkaline levels from these alternatives are higher and they’re much healthier.
• Grapefruit: Grapefruits have very high water content and are alkalizing when digested. Eaten fresh in the morning, they can give you an energy boost and can start your alkalizing diet. Like most fruits in the diet, make sure that you eat them alone and don’t combine them with any other fruit type.
Many of our organs, including the kidneys and the large intestines, eliminate wastes and toxins from our bodies. They keep our bowels moving, absorbing the needed nutrients from our food and disposing of all the unwanted wastes. These organs have limits, though. They can only process the food they are given. If we eat enough unhealthy food, or if we do not eat enough materials to process and clean out these toxins, our body changes and in turn cannot control the toxins. Our organs react to the toxins and we feel tired or sick and we lack energy.
Many illnesses we experience are the result of the body’s attempt to clean up our system. Our organs secrete and maintain a variety of fluids that control the body’s health. One of the most important fluids our organs maintain is blood. Blood has a pH level of 7.4, making it slightly alkaline. The blood’s alkalinity has to be kept constant, and even the smallest deviation from this can prove dangerous and very unhealthy. If the blood in our system is too acidic, the heart relaxes and the heartbeat can slow down and even stop. With too alkaline blood, the heart contracts and can also stop beating.
To avoid acidity or alkalinity in our blood, our bodies have built-in regulators called "blood buffers" that prevent increased acidity and work to keep the pH from fluctuating. For instance, exercise and extreme movement can make our blood more acid; breathing deeply and rapidly for a minute or two is the body's natural way of decreasing this acidity, by providing the blood with more oxygen. We can help our bodies maintain a healthy pH balance by maintaining a diet that controls the levels of alkaline and acidic foods that we eat.
